Helpful Information About Mold Remediation

It's not uncommon for those who need mold remediation to receive quotes from different companies, each with significantly different scopes of work and with pricing that also varies significantly. For these reasons, many of our customers are less certain about what to do next than when they began seeking solutions to their problems with mold. There are only two major categories in which mold can be removed from surfaces and the air.

Surfaces

Mold is removed from a surface through a combination of HEPA vacuuming, wiping, scrubbing, or treating a surface with chemicals. If a material is too damaged to remove mold, the material itself is removed.

If stains associated with visible mold cannot be removed, the surface can be sealed with an encapsulant. If a company suggests to you that they will fog an environment to kill mold without also removing mold from surfaces, you are not receiving a mold removal service.

Air

Mold is removed from the air through filtration, ventilation, and fogging. Filtration removes mold from the air by drawing air through a filter that is dense enough to capture microscopic particles. Ventilation is the process of replacing air in a building with outside air.

Fogging is the process of propagating a chemical in the air that attracts particles. The particles stick to the chemical and settle on the floor. If a company offers a mold removal service that does not include any of the previously referenced methods, you are probably not receiving a mold removal service.

Mold Remediation Put Simply

Mold removal is like janitorial work on steroids and sometimes includes demolition. The goal is to remove as many microscopic particles, such as mold spores and other allergens, from surfaces and the air. If a surface is rotten, it should be removed. If a surface is very porous and it's not possible to completely remove mold from the pores, the surface should be sealed with an encapsulant.

It's helpful to know that it's not possible to completely remove mold spores from a building. Mold spores are within building materials such as wood and drywall. There are always mold spores in the indoor air and the outdoor air. Therefore, the goal is to reduce levels to within reasonable ranges and to prevent conditions favorable for growth.
